INSIGHT Memorandum of Understanding
The European Commission is strongly committed to a green transition towards a net zero emission continent by 2050. To reach this goal, the EC presented in 2019 the European Green Deal and the subsequent Cohesion Policy framework declining the roadmap for making the EU’s economy sustainable by turning climate and environmental challenges into opportunities across all policy areas and making the transition just and inclusive for all.
In this framework, Industrial Symbiosis (IS) emerges as a strategical tool for the implementation of Circular Economy, generating virtuous interactions between companies and the territory and simultaneously allowing to promote competitiveness, innovation, and employment while protecting ecosystems and biodiversity.
Nevertheless, setting up Industrial Symbiosis is often challenging and requires skilled and dedicated people to facilitate the process. Therefore, in project INSIGHT, the Industrial Symbiosis Facilitator profile has been defined, as a function with the aim to define and promote synergies between companies, cooperation in industrial parks and with other stakeholders, and capitalize on the benefits of implementing Circular Economy. The INSIGHT project developed a training course to provide the necessary knowledge and skills for this position, accessible through an e-learning platform
Finally, INSIGHT developed a blueprint that identifies five priorities and related recommendations for stakeholders having a key role for the development of IS, encouraging to enable IS through the creation and empowerment of IS Facilitators, becoming key actors of the economic transition.
