To scale up industrial symbiosis, the SCALER project partners published in February 2020 a set of guides helping companies start industrial symbiosis. The document highlights the opportunities and benefits of Industrial Symbiosis for the industry – decreasing companies impact on the environment and waste, while increasing profitability and develop local economy and jobs. It then describes six key drivers to kick start synergies : tools, technology, finance, intermediaries, network and knowledge & skills.
In this last topic, the publication insists on the importance of access to the right knowledge to start synergies and build trust. « Lasting synergies require a specific set of skills that will support the sustainability of the collaboration »
The guides are completed by a list of 100 synergies that could be implemented in the European process industry to help businesses identify potential waste exchange with other firms.
